Hermitage homemaker loved music

An avid country music fan and line dancer, Loraine Mitchell, 49, of 427 Morefield Road, Hermitage, Pa., died on Aug. 23, 1998.

Loved by her family and countless friends, Mrs. Mitchell was born Sept. 25, 1948, in New Castle, Pa., to Alice M. Durbin Cable, of Ellwood City, Pa., and the late Rex P. Cable.

She married Robert L. Mitchell on Oct. 10, 1969, and they later remarried on Aug. 3, 1986.

Mrs. Mitchell was a caretaker for the elderly at the Shenango Inn in Sharon, Pa. Prior to that she worked at The Dinner Bell, Sharon; the West Middlesex Diner, West Middlesex, Pa., and Treasure Island department store in Hermitage. Also a homemaker, she was a Protestant.

Besides her husband and mother, she left four sons, David, Rex and Robert Jr., all of Sharon; and Jeffrey, Augusta, Ga.; three sisters, Carol A. Williston, Fla.; Patricia Zahniser, Sharon; and Linda J. Burns, New Castle; three brothers, John M. Cable, Naperville, Ill.; Jeff Riemer, Sarver, Pa.; and Robert Winter, Kittaning, Pa.; and six grandchildren, David, 12; Stephanie, 11; Amanda, 9; Samantha, 8; Tiffany, 7 and Michael, 6.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Jaqueline Kurtz.

Arrangements were made by John Flynn Funeral Home Inc., 2630 E. State St., Hermitage. A funeral service was held in the funderal home chapel. She is interred at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hermitage.

She died unexpectedly in the emergency room of Sharon Regional Health System of a heart attack.

Mrs. Mitchell is remembered fondly by her family.

She had a difficult start in life as she grew up in a number of orphanages, said her husband, Robert.

"I think this is how she became who she was,’’ he said. "She learned how to do things on her own. It made her a strong woman, mother and wife.’’

Although her real name was Alice, everyone knew her by her middle name, Loraine.

She and Robert met at St. Paul Home in Greenville, Pa. On his second tour in Vietnam during the Vietnam War, she wrote him and asked that he look her up when he returned home. He did and the couple married in Kileen, Texas. The couple were divorced in 1982 and she moved to Arizona for a few years.

She came back to the Sharon area and the couple reconnected and were married again in Las Vegas.

Mrs. Mitchell loved to listen to country music and line dance. She would frequently visit country hangouts to listen to her favorite country bands and enjoyed wearing country-western clothing.

At 4 feet, 11 inches tall, she had courage in speaking her mind. She was an excellent housewife, flower gardener and cook. Everyone loved her Spanish rice.

"A lot of people could make Spanish rice but lot like Lorain made,’’ Robert said.

Skilled at finances she also was a very generous woman. Friends and relatives lovingly called her "The Bank,’’ because they knew if they were in a bind she would lend them money.

But her favorite topic was her grandchildren. Each summer the couple would invite all the grandchildren to their home and travel.

"She loved being around her grandchioldren,’’ Robert said.
